about
I returned from Fiji in May of 2007 eager to start work on my second record. Brian and Giulio were living in nearby mar vista and converted the shed behind their house to a rehearsal/recording space lovingly known as the Fun-N-Only Room. It was here in early July that we began examining some of my new songs as a band would: jamming together, recording some demos, and bouncing ideas off each other.
We soon became excited at the potential of one song in particular: a slow 6/8 ballad I’d penned in the first few days after returning from Fiji. this song would live and die by the locked-in rhythm of a simple drum beat, a lot of open space in the orchestration, & a snarling B3 organ solo. On July 7, 2007 we tracked the first demo of “Australian Girls”, with Brian on the drums, Giuls on bass & organ, & myself playing guitar & singing. What makes this early recording unique is the presence of Kelli, who had not yet left the band. Her vocals added an element I’d miss later on the album version.
