After Welcome to the Danger Show, I had the rather ambitious idea to record two albums simultaneously. Anthems and Beneath a Balcony would be made in the same studio, with the same band, but the soundscapes would be different in every way: different sounds for drums & vocals as well as different approaches to instrumentation. Anthems would sound more indie-rock & Beneath a Balcony would be more folk/Americana.
For the most part, the song selection would also vary, but in two cases, I could not decide on which album the songs should appear: “Baby I’m Okay” and “Bullet”. These songs were recorded both ways, with clear differences in the way we approached them. When both albums eventually saw the light of day, the dual treatment only survived for “Baby I’m Okay”. This is the lost version of “Bullet” that would have appeared on Anthems.
