Losing Brian as my drummer in January 2008 definitely disrupted the well-oiled machine that was the Dead Messengers, and my short-lived dream of the house of rehearsals and recordings and wild parties was diminished somewhat. All the same, Giulio and I still made the most of his studio setup and continued to make plenty of demo recordings throughout 2008. (You’ll be pleased to know: the parties continued as well).
This 1st demo of “Passenger Seat”, done alongside a handful of others in early February of 2008, is an example of how having Giulio as a stop-gap drummer changed the way the songs took shape. Giulio’s background in jazz music is evident in the way he helped me build “Passenger Seat” from a jangly acoustic song into something new and different. Matt Cooker, who had begun to play shows with the Dead Messengers on the cello, also contributed to the fluid, open nature of the song. While the final version that appears on Beneath a Balcony changed certain elements, I think the recipe for the overall feel of the song was a direct result of this early demo and the band’s contributions.
Marc M Cogman - vocals, acoustic guitar
Giulio Carmassi - piano, bass, vibraphone, drums & percussion
