In February of 2006, I was fresh off the most successful tour the Neon Calm had ever had, but the band’s future was as much in doubt as ever. I’d started to conceive of a new project; a record that centered on my songs and lyrics, with as many of my talented friends chipping in as possible. I’d already picked out the title: Welcome to the Danger Show. My first record wouldn’t arrive for over a year, and tracking the actual album wouldn’t happen until autumn, but the realization in February of 2006 was the first step of the journey.
If I had to pinpoint the next major step, it was a trip to the Pacific Northwest for a few solo shows, & the day I sat down in a cafe in Portland, Oregon and wrote the song that would introduce my new musical life. “Run Like Hell” began in Portland on May 5, and was completed just hours before a last-minute studio session at the Record Plant on June 6, 2006.
This was the very first demo of the song that really set me on my way. You can hear how I already had the drumbeat in my head, months before we recorded it.
