One of the big differences for me between the process of my first album versus that of my second is the way the band and I started to build the songs in the rehearsal room, as opposed to just doing so in the studio. One such song was “Waltz Beneath a Balcony”, which began appearing as a staple of our live shows in the summer of 2007, well before it was first demoed. When we finally got around to committing it to tape, in Giulio’s studio at Dangerland in February of 2008, it was as familiar to us as any of the songs on Welcome to the Danger Show.
Just like the rest of the demos from February 2008, necessity had made Giulio the drummer as well as playing keys and bass. Matt Cooker’s cello track is another aspect of this demo that differs from the album version. Finally, Steve’s rambling lead guitar work, built out of improvised takes, is markedly different to the way he played it several months later at Radar! when we recorded the version that appears as track #2 on Beneath a Balcony. I love this early look almost as much.
