about
In December 2006, I was putting the final touches on Welcome to the Danger Show, playing shows every few weeks as part of my residency at the Mint, and overall feeling pretty pleased with myself that I’d managed to pull off the transition from band-member to solo artist. Then out of nowhere, I was approached to take part in a film. I’d never been an actor and I wasn’t really itching to become one, but the producers of this film told me I’d get to play one of my own songs in the movie. The catch: it had to be a new song, and it had to have certain dark themes.
I sat down that very night and wrote a song that I now recognize as one of my best: “Bullet”. Oddly enough, while the movie people loved the song, they didn’t think it was quite right at first, so they asked me to try again. A few weeks later, I wrote and demoed “Consequence”. Any fan of “Bullet” can hear the similarities in both theme and certain lyrical images.
I will admit: in January of 2007, I believed “Consequence” was better. In the end, I changed my mind, the movie folks did too, and we went with “Bullet” after all. As a result, up until now, “Consequence” has never been heard by anyone else.
